Dave Draper has recently written a new book titled, "Iron On My Mind" which in my own mind is a mother lode of motivation and training inspiration. Muscle and Fitness magazine has proclaimed Dave as one of the 20 most popular bodybuilders of all time and to his credit he has won the Mr. America, Mr. Universe, and Mr. World titles. He was a regular in Joe Weider's muscle magazines of the 60s and early 70s where he was bestowed the nickname "The Blond Bomber". Dave also appeared in movies and television during the same time period. Aside from Dave Draper's many bodybuilding accomplishments he must be considered to be one of the iron game's most prolific writers. Every week like clockwork Dave pumps out a weekly column for his terrific www.DaveDraper.com, Iron Online website which he operates with his wife Laree Draper. This site is loaded with training and nutrition advice plus has a Discussion Forum where a great group of like-minded "Bombers" share experiences about muscle building and life in general.
As much as I love this site, I must say that I was originally attracted to it by Dave's weekly column which is also offered as a free weekly email newsletter. I instinctively knew Dave was on to something that was uniquely different from what every other bodybuilder or writer in the field was doing. These essays are truly gems that spring forth from a subconscious mind that projects an unmistakable wit and wisdom only Dave could possess.
This new book, Iron On My Mind, is a collection of sixty-two columns/essays from the over 350 published on the www.DaveDraper.com website since early 1999. These little 1500 word jolts of advice, inspiration, and motivation are really very special and just what the doctor ordered. With each essay Dave draws from his bottomless bag of bodybuilding experience to encourage and motivate his army of faithful followers (Bombers) to keep pumping iron and to make fitness and health an everyday lifestyle. Dave's writing style is witty, humorous, uplifting, and fun to read as he takes us through his iron journeys in hopes that you can relate and learn from his trials and tribulations and in the long run become successful with your muscle building quest.
I feel that Dave's writings are timeless and ageless. By timeless I mean it doesn't matter if it is 1970 or 2006. By ageless I mean that Dave could be talking to an 18 year old or a 60 year old and the message is the same. It is a message of persistence, consistency, hard work and...oh yeah, one other thing...humor! This guy is funny! I don't know how many times I have laughed out loud by some little thing Dave has written that hits the nail on the head. Some little experience or truth that all iron pumpers have shared at one time or another that triggers your iron funny bone. Dave says that at birth we are given a miracle to enjoy, cherish and care for. We call it life. He encourages us to live life to the fullest by training hard, eating right, being happy, and paying homage to the iron and steel. It's a lifestyle for sure and Dave is one guy who has done it all and with over 50 years of training under his belt, he is all too happy to advise, demonstrate, and generally cajole us ironheads into striving to be the best that we can be. Dave says that keeping the stone rolling and free of moss has become his hobby. Although the main focus of "Iron On My Mind" is on bodybuilding and fitness, there is a whole lot more going on here. These essays are life lessons that can be applied to any of your other endeavors and Dave relates them in a relaxed conversational style of writing as if he was in the gym sitting on a bench talking to you like an old buddy. "Iron On My Mind" is a book that belongs on every muscle builder's shelf and like Dave's other books it should be considered required reading. However, please note that this book does not show specific workout routines or diet plans. For that you need to read Dave's book, "Brother Iron, Sister Steel" which the Feb. 2006 edition of Muscle and Fitness magazine called the "Best Bodybuilding Book". They also went on to say that Dave "conveys everything you need to know about training in a package of lyrical conversation and mellifluous prose". Wow! To read my review of this book click here. If you are overweight, you need to read Dave's book, "Your Body Revival - Weight Loss Straight Talk". To read my review of this book click here. If you want to read a fun book about bodybuilding's golden years be sure to get Dick Tyler's "West Coast Bodybuilding Scene - The Golden Years". To read my review of this book click here.
In summation I heartily recommend this book and if you want Dave to personally sign it for you, order from his website www.DaveDraper.com. |
